There are a large range of embroidery threads available to work in. Using stranded cotton such as DMC or Anchor threads are probably the easiest and most traditional form of hand embroidery thread. These are available in a very wide range of colours and you can easily get them from craft shops such as Hobbycraft, John Lewis and also online. You can split these threads to make them thinner to work with as well so they can go a long way. This is the best type of thread to get just now if you only want to invest in one type.

However, there are lots of other types of threads available from wool to silk floss threads, metallic threads and even thicker yarns like knitting wool can be used for stitching. You can always think out-of-the-box as well and anything that is potentially in thread form can be used for stitching. I'll show you an example of how I used wire to do running stitch.
